T.J. Casey presents third in-school residency

Story & picture by Jason Phillips

Cowboy poet, T.J. Casey of the Billings area was here last week to work with local students on the art of Western poetry and music.

This is the third year T.J. has worked with local students. Other years he was here the week before Mother’s Day and his students

were eager and ready for the student’s Friday night portion of the weekend Motherin’ Up events.

Students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade as well as the music students throughout the school studied under T.J. this year.

Having worked with young people for many years, T. J. knows of their reluctance to “be the first” to do a poem and also their typical

habit of following the lead of whichever student is ahead of them as far as topic. To solve these traits, T. J. assigns each student

their topic - all guaranteed to bring laughs and much variety in their written words.

One highlight this year was having the first grade music students learn to yodel - with a comment from one of the audience stating

they sounded like coyotes, which to some could be a compliment.
