Ranch Raised
Shelby - 7th grade

Here on the ranch we work all day
After a long day there is much to say
Bringing home the rich nutritious meal
Come on inside so we can all eat

Herding the cattle
Fetching the horse and putting on the saddle
Cows are going to get loose
Flying over the open prairie goes a migrating goose

Chickens are raised here too
They help feed our big crew
Often times our ancestors would make up a song
Used to soothe the cattle all night long

Useful resources have helped all this time
Improvements will warm your heart with a chime
Love this ranch till death
This is where I want to take my last breath

That smell of the sweet cow stench
Family gathers around on the old wooden bench
Many memories filled with emotion
Most of these memories caused lots of commotion

"Gallopin' Goat Roper"

by James - 7th grade

There was a huge stampede
Of gallopin' goats.
They were everywhere
In pastures, in cornfields, and even in boats.

It was all too strange,
They were too fast.
They zoomed right by
As they went past.

Someone had to fix this,
But who could it be?
That guy over there,
Maybe?

So I asked for his name.
He says, "I don't have a name,
I'm the gallopin' goat roper,
And roping gallopin' goats is my game."

So I say,
"Okay, let's cut to the chase.
You rope gallopin' goats,
So rope those goats before I slap your face!"

He said, "Okay, I will,
Just don't hurt me.
I'll sting those goats
Like a buzzing bee."

He gets up and gets his special rope,
Made from the hairs of a lion's mane.
From the way it looks,
I can tell this is going to cause a lot of pain.

He roped those goats,
So swift and so fast.
In my opinion,
The goats placed last.

So as you can see,
This guy was no joker.
He was a genuine,
Gallopin' goat roper.

Ben's Dilemma

by Kirstyn - 8th grade

The room was quiet, everyone still,

the president wiped his hands

he picked up his pen, only to wonder

could he meet their demands?

One this day, November the second,

two states wanted to join

who would be first, the North or the South?

maybe he should flip a coin.

He finally decided how it should be done,

he simply would not look

he mixed up the papers and closed his eyes

and one paper he took.

He signed one with a flourish

the other as well,

he was done with this deed

the order he would not tell.

Although North will be first

because N is before S

Everyone knows,

South Dakota is best!

Massacre of Wounded Knee

by Brianne - 8th grade

The massacre of Wounded Knee

could put a hole in any man's pride.

Can't you see

the Indian's Blood Tide?

From that first shot

too many lives had been taken.

The Indians would have fought

but they couldn't; their confidence shaken.

But we must cope

with this story,

and only hope

we can learn from history...
