The Wilderness

by - 5th Grade

Out there in the wilderness

I saw a white-tailed deer

while I was walking through the meadow

with my backpack full of gear.

I was headed for the mountains

where the mountain goats roam

as they eat the wildflowers

in their wilderness home.

Then I saw the river

where a bear was catching fish

 I walked a trail between the trees

then I heard a "swish".

I turned to see a bird fly

from out of the sagebrush

then there came a porcupine waddling in a rush.

Then there was this moose

munching on the moss

then there came a big bull elk

who thought he was the boss.

Then I came upon a desert skunk

chewin' on the grass

he was in the shade of a cactus

and he wouldn't let me pass.

So I turned to run away

didn't know I could move like that

till I saw the big gray wolf

who was sniffing a pile of scat.

The Busy Day
by k - 1 st Grade

The cowboy and cowgirl gets up

they dress up for the day

they go and feed the chickens

then feed the cattle hay.

Then they eat pancakes for breakfast

with bacon and eggs on the side

then they catch the horses

and saddle up for the ride.

Then they rope the sick calf

doctor and mark him real good

then put him in the corral

and leave him where he stood.

They feed carrots to the pigs

then catch that rotten rat

then they check them baaain' sheep

and shed their chinks and hat.

The dog is chasing the cat

as they're headed for the house

to cook themselves some supper

and pass out on the couch.

Where the Buffalo Roam

by 4th grade

The buffalo on the plains

were hunted by "the people",

while eagles soared above the hills

out on the western plains.

The grass down in the valleys

the water in the streams

the buffalo needed both of these

while drifting in the valleys.

There came a hunting party

then it started to rain

then the birds all flew away

there came a hunting party.

The river flows through the woods

and down the mountain side

a cougar sneaking through the trees

deep down in the woods.
