Larry Morgan from the 해운대 고구려 Orion HR Group, a staffing consulting firm that specializes in salary analytics, reports on the following massage therapist average compensation in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, for the month of May 2020. Using employment data from the BLS, we analyzed and put together a breakdown of average massage therapist salaries in each state across the United States. Read on to get the full scoop on where massage therapists earn more and where massage therapists earn less. While our guide is meant to provide a better idea of what you can earn as a massage therapist, keep in mind that, like most careers, the salary you make will vary greatly depending on what city and state you live in, where you work, and how hard you work, any specializations you have, and how well you are able to market yourself and attract clients. Working as a freelance massage therapist means you will be able to set your own rates, although what you are able to charge will vary greatly depending on where you live, what kind of massages you do, how long your treatments last, and if you offer additional services such as aromatherapy or hot-stone massages.

Others might pay you a recurring stipend for time not spent giving a real massage. Your employer might be willing to pay you a percentage for every massage session you give. While you may be able to suggest a treatment package, most massage companies charge by the session.

Depending on where you are practicing, the typical timeframe for massage sessions may be between 45 and 60 minutes. In addition to the dedicated hours spent providing massage, a therapist might also take time to write notes for clients, market, book clients, wash linens, and perform other routine business tasks. Because therapists in most cases work on an appointment basis, their schedules and number of hours worked per week varies greatly. Due to the nature of the job, most therapists who identify as being a full-time practitioner work between 15-30 hours per week.

According to the AMTA, practitioners who make home visits or work in resorts make the most money per hour, whereas those working in massage chains usually make the least. Massage therapists who are board-certified may make on average $7,000 more a year. According to NCBTMBs annual survey, massage therapists who are board-certified make $33,139 on average per year – over $7,000 more than the average reported by members of the AMTA, certified or uncertified. The benefits of massage therapy are well recognized, and the number of jobs for massage therapists is expected to grow 22% from 2014-2024, and the median massage therapist makes $39,360 a year.

The average annual salary of massage therapists nationwide is $47,180, according to recent data from the BLS. In the highest-paying states for massage therapists, they earn a median annual salary of $77,080, far higher than the national average of all professions. From a median salary of $84,270 in 2014, massage therapy wages have fallen 8.5% to the current median.

The doubling means many massage therapists have an array of tax-deductible business expenses which may reduce the amount of their reported taxable income. Most independent massage therapists make anywhere from $50.00-$75.00 an hour, though what they actually earn in profits will actually depend on many factors, including their overhead costs, such as rent, fees, equipment, travel, and, of course, taxes. To get more clarity about the question of an hourly rate, imagine that you are a staff member of a massage clinic who charges clients $75 for each massage.

Many factors affect what amount of money someone is willing or able to pay for massage. The fees charged for massage services can be whatever you want, but if people cannot justify the value versus the burden of cost, they are not going to put money toward that service. If you have a practice and you are charging $75 per standard hour-long massage, then most of that money is going back to running the business. For instance, if you purchase towels or a massage table for your massage therapy practice, you should be allowed to deduct the entire cost.

Hopefully, you already own your massage table and cushions, but if not, this is a good time to purchase. When you begin offering more special massages, such as pregnancy massages, you will want to build in savings to get extra bolsters, which cost $250 extra.

If having your own massage business is not really your thing, it is a no-brainer. To maximize your earnings, you will want to ensure that you are certified as a massage therapist by a accredited facility such as Northwestern, which will prepare you for the NCBTMB (National Board for the Certification of Therapeutic Massage) or the MBLEX (Federation of Massage Therapy States) exams. The starting salary of your opening position will vary depending on the skills required and experience as a massage therapist.

As a home-based or traveling massage therapist, medical massage therapy may offer the ultimate flexibility as a second income earner from the comfort of home. To help cut down on their rental costs, many massage therapy entrepreneurs prefer to share their space with chiropractors or physical therapists. As a massage education provider, Rebecca de Azevedo Overson has been lucky enough to meet hundreds of successful therapists, many making $75,000 to $100,000 and up each year from massage.

Successful therapists are very clear about the fact that the sole duty of their massage schools is to train them as massage therapists, while the responsibility is on them to learn the skills of the business.

$32 is clearly a wide range, and a variety of factors will affect what sports massage pays, including employer and its business model, location, experience level and specialty, and the qualifications of the therapist. You are not going to get the actual eight hours that the massage profession calls contact hours – time spent doing massages in particular. Some, for instance, will include the time off from work into the percentage of your salary that goes to each massage you do.
